What to include
- What you clicked, and what appeared instead of the file.
- The message the extension showed you, word for word if you still have it.
- Roughly how long the conversation was.
- Your browser and operating system.
Things we cannot see
We have no copy of your conversations and no server-side log of your exports, because neither ever reaches us. That is deliberate — see the privacy policy — but it does mean we cannot look up what went wrong on your account. Your description is genuinely all we have to work with.
Common situations
The export stopped part-way. ChatGPT occasionally changes how its interface serves a conversation. When that happens the extension stops and says so rather than handing you a file that is quietly incomplete. Tell us what it said and we will look at it.
You are signed out of ChatGPT. The extension asks ChatGPT for your conversation as you. If your ChatGPT session has expired, sign back in and try again.
The PDF button opened a print dialog instead of downloading a file. That is the intended path, not a fault. A Chrome extension cannot produce a PDF silently, so the last step is Chrome’s own Save as PDF in the print dialog. The upside is that the file is an ordinary, searchable PDF made by the browser you already trust — and the suggested filename is the conversation’s own title.
Nothing happened when you clicked. Two causes account for almost all of these. Either the page had not finished loading the conversation yet — the buttons appear as soon as the extension recognises a conversation page, which can be a moment before ChatGPT itself is ready — or a pop-up blocker swallowed the print window. If a message appeared and then faded, that sentence is the thing to send us.
Images are missing from the Markdown file. That one is by design and worth stating plainly: the Markdown export marks where each image was instead of embedding it. A single screenshot turned into base64 text can push a note-sized .md file into the megabytes, which defeats the reason to pick Markdown in the first place. If you need the pictures inside the file, export to PDF — images are embedded there.
The buttons are not showing up at all. They only appear on a conversation page. On the ChatGPT home screen, in a project view, or in settings there is nothing to export, so the extension stays out of the way. Open a chat and they appear in the right margin.
Limits worth knowing before you write in
One export covers the conversation you have open — the extension never opens or walks through your chat list, so there is no bulk mode to enable and no setting we can switch on for you. Length is not a limit: the conversation is fetched as data rather than read off the screen, so a thread that scrolls for an hour comes out in one pass.
Formatting that survives: headings, code blocks with their indentation, tables, quoted passages, and the order the messages were written in. Formatting that does not: anything ChatGPT renders with a live widget rather than text. If you find something that comes out wrong, that is a bug worth an email — the export path is the part of this extension we care most about.
The PDF looks different from the page. PDF is produced by Chrome’s own print engine, so the result follows Chrome’s print rules rather than the on-screen layout. Choosing “Save as PDF” as the destination gives the closest result.
